High Performance Leadership. It’s a Process.

Reflecting on what I’m thankful for this morning and noticing that there’s a pattern in the things I most appreciate.

  • A good cup of coffee

  • An hour long swim that clears my head

  • A clean, well tended yard

  • A warm, comfortable home

  • A family that can have kind and honest conversations

  • Work that is meaningful with a team of people who are committed to a common purpose

These are some of the things I LOVE! You probably have a list of the things that motivate you too. If you don’t, it may be a fun little exercise.

The element that runs through each of these favourite things, is that none of them can be created instantly. They all require a PROCESS for them to come to being.

Even the simplest item on this list, the cup of coffee, is a process. You may not have had to be a part of much or any of that process, but I promise you that there’s been a lot of time, money, effort and energy that went into that perfectly brewed coffee you picked up at the drive-through this morning. 

Process.

The same is true for leadership. There are leadership programs that tell you who you SHOULD be, as if imitating them will get you the results you are looking for.

This is the instant road.

Less effective.

Less rewarding. 

The more gruelling, rewarding path is to discover what you already bring, what might be hidden deep inside, to heal the wounds that keep us from really showing up, being brave, keeping our own skin on and asking for and creating what we need, want and hope for.

This is a process.

Not instant.

Very rewarding.

Very effective.

Because connection is an essential ingredient for all transformational growth, I need to ask two very important questions…..

Who do you have with you on your path to personal and professional development?

Are they individuals who agree with you at all times, people who see the world through the same lens as you, or someone who will sharpen you, as iron sharpens iron?

These days, many of us are looking for an easy fix…. meanwhile, the experience that we are seeking sits off to the side because we don’t have the patience to choose a path that requires a process.

What do you really want?

How could you get there?

Who might assist you?
